Hello,
I hope I can help, but although alot of the troubles are now subsided in Belfast, it reall is a beautiful city to visit, If it was me doing the trip, and I am from County Galway in the republic of Ireland, I would consider taking a place to stay outside of Belfast like on the County Down coast like Bangor, Newtownards, or Comber, all within an easy drive or bus trip into belfast, and what a lovely place to spend a whole month on Holiday, Janey! you would never want to leave……
The religious differences now are just about settled too, you can easily find the church of your faith wherever you are staying,. and worship Our God in the peace of your own devotions, I honestly feel, there will not be any more flare ups over religion anymore, there’s no point. just be happy on your holiday, and if you want to, you can just keep quiet about your religious beliefs, in the knowledge that if you ask our God to protect you, and you enjoy the month’s stay and nothing happens to upset you, then maybe our God heard you, and looked after you all the time anyway. please go, and enjoy yourselves, a family together will love the place, because you all know and Love each other. Heaven bless you all. ….. Tony M

You’ll be fine! Northern Ireland is a beautiful country and Belfast an awesome city! As long as you stay out of the estates and certain areas you should be fine, try and stay central! Look on the internet regarding where to stay. But don’t be scared you’ll enjoy it!

    Hi Carole
I just spend five years in Belfast and it truly was a great adventure. Working as a bouncer I saw the underbelly of Belfast and to be honest it is little different than any other city in the western world. However, sectarianism is still prevalent in some estates as Clanz mentioned. If you stay close to town and the tourist areas you will not encounter anything out of the ordinary. But, the majority of people in Belfast realise that thirty years of mayhem has robbed them of normalcy and they would now just like to get on with their lives.

Belfast has a very young population that likes to party, so it gives the city a real energy and vibe that is infectious. You will have plenty to do in Belfast and the surrounding coastal regions. The city is compact and easy to get around, with a good bus service and most taxi rides around a “fiver”. You can go to the Odyssey Arena and spend the day bowling, watching a movie or visiting Sci-Tech, take the Red bus tour around Belfast, have a coffee or drink along The Golden Mile. Go shopping in the city centre. Take the train to the Antrim coast.

As for accommodation it really depends how much you want to spend; The Malone Lodge has serviced apartments and on the same street there are several bed and breakfast type places. This is up near Queens University and is a lovely cosmopolitan area. I lived around this area. You have the Museum, the Botanic Gardens, Restaurants and Pubs in a place called Stranmillis. All just a good fifteen minutes walk from town. You have plenty of shops around on the major roads as well.

I recommend Belfast highly. I had a great Five years there.
